General Classroom Expectations
Accelerated Reading
In third grade, students will need to read a minimum of 20-30 minutes every night. Similar to last year, students will take a quiz on the book they have read and points are associated with each test. The reading goal for each student is based on their current reading level. Upon attaining the goal, there is an end of the trimester incentive. AR goal achievement per trimester accounts for 20% of their reading grade.
Math Facts
In third grade, your child will be using "Math Facts in a Flash" software program to assist in developing math computation skills. Math fact mastery is an essential skill for students. During the first trimester, the goal for each student is to master the addition facts using our "Math Facts in a Flash" program. For the second trimester, the goal is for each student is to master the subtraction facts. The third trimester's goal is to master the multiplication facts. Students may practice math facts using the websites found under the "Math" menu on the home page. Math fact mastery for each trimester account for 20% of the math grade.
Math Homework
In general, math homework will be sent home daily Monday - Thursday. There may be some exceptions, such as, the day before the test when homework will not be sent. In addition, students will be expected to practice their math fact skills.
Spelling
Typically, we will pretest each spelling list on Monday and administer the final test on Friday of each week. Students are expected to practice any words spelled incorrectly on the pretest during the week. There will be certain weeks where a spelling test is not administered. For example, during MCA testing time, third graders will not have a spelling test that week.
Speak Up
Throughout the year, your child will have the opportunity to develop speaking skills through our Speak Up program. If we have a Speak Up topic for the week, it will be sent home with your child on Monday, so that he or she has the opportunity to prepare and practice for the Speak Up topic of the week. We typically present the Speak Up for on Fridays.
Behaviors
We begin our year by allowing our students to take part in creating classroom expectations. They are created agreed upon by the class as a whole and are posted in our room as a reminder throughout the year. The expectations are centered around being a respectful and responsible learner. We also have a rule to HAVE FUN while learning!
